JQ: I do. I don’t take criticisms personal. It’s just people commenting on a story that could be a story inThe Onion because it was taking something so seriously … I couldn’t make fun of it as a reporter, but I could try to have a little fun with it.

A small quibble here, from a former copyeditor and friend of a few residents of both: Sioux City and Sioux Falls are two different places, but are conflated in your deck and fourth graf.

Whoops, I'll cop to that mistake. Thanks for the catch.

John Quinlan wrote an entertaining story about something that's pretty important to Sioux Cityans. It is a good example of community journalism. While it may cause other, more sophisticated (tongue-in-cheek here) reporters to snicker at the "provincialism" of the region, Quinlan's story was what Jock Lauterer would call relentlessly local journalism. Perhaps other writers could improve the quality of their work by spending a year or two with a community weekly or daily newspaper.
