Also: Stein says we need to bear in mind that events follow patterns, and you know, there haven’t been many heads of massive nonprofit economic accused of violent sex crimes in the past. So
Now, there may be something to the charges that the media is unfairly trying Strauss-Kahn, attacking him, and vilifying him. But a reasonable discussion about that issue does not begin with vile sideswipes at the faceless woman claiming he attacked her.

Nice work, @Joel. Very nice work.

Some of the defenses of Strauss-Kahn, notably that of Levy, remind of the defenses of Ted Kennedy and Bill Clinton. You know, the ones that the peccadillos of powerful men must be put into the perspective of the great work they are doing. One wag, referring to the media obituaries of in-the-drink Eddie, called it the "Mary Jo Kopechne died so that the Food Allegrin Labeling and Consumer Protection Act could live" defense.
It's OK to drag in Ben Stein when he says something stupid (it's a media habit to "balance" an obviously foolish or dumb statement from a left-leaner out with one from the right, though no such compulsion exists when the reverse occurs), but most defenses of Strauss-Kahn have come from the other side of the political divide, and by no means were Stein's comments clearly "worse' - unless you are a CJR staffer applying (seems to be kind of a job requirement) a narrow political test to any match-up between those on the political "right" vs. the "left". Most right-wingers I know or read are grimly filled with schadenfreude at the spectacle of yet another "caviar socialist" being exposed as the hollow person that he is.

I think this is one of the few instances where we can have bipartisan agreement. Both guys were idiots on this topic.
Also agree the media is unfairly rejoicing in DSK's distress. But they're just giving all of us media consumers what we want. The spectacle of his fall from grace is hypnotic.
