A Fresh Take on South Carolina

January 29, 2004

Today’s Atlanta-Constitution Journal, regrettably ignored north of the Mason-Dixon line, offers some useful insight into the upcoming South Carolina primary.

Conventional wisdom says that Rep. James Clyburn’s endorsement of John Kerry will give the Massachusetts senator a big boost among African-American voters going into the South Carolina primary next Tuesday.

Maybe not, says Matthew C. Quinn. Reporting from Orangeburg, S.C., Quinn offers up the views of “independent-minded” African-American voters who make it clear that they are not necessarily swayed by an endorsement from Rep. Clyburn.

Also reporting from South Carolina, Drew Jubera sketches out the little-known political history of the “Palmetto State.” The profile is sprinkled with tidbits of valuable demographic information not found in many of the major newspapers covering the state’s primary.
