Ultimately, the paper got caught in the collapse of chains and ended up as the property of a group based in Fargo. But it survived. So did Laurie Hertzel. She left the paper in 1994 and, despite her vow to remain loyal to her native Duluth, moved to the Twin Cities, where she has done quite well, thank you.
