The Financial Times has redesigned its Web site, and on first impression, it’s just awful.

Why are its Web readers, who surely trend younger than print subscribers, suddenly being treated like large-print Reader’s Digest subscribers? The paper this morning is still in its reassuringly small type, at least.
The fonts are bad, and it just looks cheap and terrible.
Start over, folks.
While you're on the topic of news site redesigns, what happened to CJR.org's site design?

Redesign? Did something change around here? Seriously, it's still a beta thing and we're going to make an announcement soon, but right now it's a secret so don't tell anyone, okay?
And doesn't it look much better than FT.com?

With all due respect (and keeping in mind that CJR may not be done with it yet) the previous design was far better. This new look feels run-of-the-mill and devoid of personality or verve. CJR used to have a clean look that imparted a sense of style to the editorial content it presented without overpowering it. A rare and difficult mix to achieve in the news business. That's gone in these new digs. The look and feel could be that of any number of anonymous publications.

Agree with all the above. I told the FT that they had lost a very good, compact, informative and navigable site, exchanging it for something second rate. Also, their search facility has been down the past couple of days. grrrr
