On this day 105 years ago, Edward R. Murrow, one of the forefathers of American broadcast journalism, was born. Murrow first came to prominence with his CBS radio reports from London during the Blitz. In the 1950s, he moved into the new medium of television, and pioneered TV news formats like newscasting, anchoring, and documentary host/producer. His series of TV news reports on the tactics of US Sen. Joseph McCarthy helped lead to the senator’s censure. As the head of CBS’s news division, Murrow established a standard for honesty, integrity, and serious reporting that broadcast journalists, for decades, have invoked.
