Walter Cronkite signs off as host of CBS Evening News for the last time

On Friday, March 6, 1981, Walter Cronkite did his last broadcast as anchorman for the CBS Evening News. During his 19 years as presenter, Cronkite — the “most trusted man in America” — reported on many of the most significant events of the postwar era, including the assassinations of President Kennedy and Martin Luther King, Jr., the Vietnam War, the moon landing, and Watergate. He ended each broadcast with his signature signoff (from which this series takes its inspiration): “And that’s the way it is.”

Cronkite died in 2009, at the age of 92. Here he is saying good night to the American public one final time:
