Rejoice, Katie!

Will Couric have her moment of moderation?
April 3, 2008

Hold onto your stilettos, everyone…Katie Couric could yet have her moment in the debate-moderation sun. Word comes today, via a Clinton-camp press release (thanks, TPM), that CBS’s long-longed-for Clinton/Obama debate will likely take place in North Carolina on April 27. (Obama had previously challenged Clinton to the debate; Clinton’s acceptance of that challenge today makes the debate very likely, if not, as yet, inevitable.)

We’re excited at the prospect—not just of another debate (the awkward congeniality! the moments of unscripted humor! …oh, how we’ve missed you!), but also, and more so, of a female moderator. (Too few of those.) And we’re already hoping that Couric will do better than some of her counterparts-in-(im)moderation at asking substantive questions of the candidates. Especially since an April 27 debate, placed smack between the Pennsylvania and North Carolina primaries, could fall during what just may be—dare we say? dare we hope?—the final throes of this loooooooong primary season.
