Shep Smith: Newcasting is Not Complicated

The Boston Globe profiles Fox News anchor Shep Smith, who “describes himself as a newscaster,” adding: “All we’re really supposed to do is find out what’s happening and tell people about it. You can make that as complicated as you want, but it’s really not.”

(Even when “what’s happening” is health care-related?)

Smith is the most prominent anchor on a network that is poised to see its best ratings year ever, with a 50 percent increase in viewers this past quarter for its primetime lineup of conservative hosts. The Obama administration, it seems, is a very good thing for Fox.

And: Mirror, mirror, on the wall; Who’s the Howard Beale-est anchor of them all? Smith (the Globe makes a Beale reference), his fellow Fox-er, Glenn Beck (who “identified with” Beale in a New York Times profile); or Keith Olbermann (who has denied being Beale-ean)?
