The Washington Post, having already brought us the definitive rap on Elena Kagan, today brings us a rap by Elena Kagan. At PostPartisan, Alexandra Petri has rewritten “in rap form” Kagan’s opening statement from her confirmation hearing yesterday such that it “conveys the same information” but is “just a bit hipper.” You be the judge (in part):
Order in the court! MC Kagan in the house!
Thank you all, here’re the principles that I espouse!
The Supreme Court is where I’ve always wanted to be
I just wish I could serve with Justice Stevens — J.P.
I’ve wanted to be on the court since I could toddle
And his humble independence was always my model.
….
Order in the court! I was a Harvard dean!
Don’t bother me with questions ‘bout the way I lean!
Now of justices defunct I’ll say, to one I’m partial
And he goes by the name of Justice Thurgood Marshall…

So painful. This is what happens when you let a Harvard grad try her hand at hip-hop, I guess. (Assuming this is the same person: http://www.thecrimson.com/writer/1203809/Alexandra_A._Petri/)

The framing of yesterday's hearings was all about Kagan's wit and composure. Very little about the exchange between Coburn and Kagan, in which she danced around his question about whether the Commerce Clause permits a government agency to order citizens to eat three meals a day and take other improving health measures. Yet the question goes to the heart of current efforts to challenge Obamacare's federal mandates. The clip is all over the 'conservative' blogosphere - the days when the networks could spike embarrassments and inconveniences to liberal figures are over.
