CJR hosted a panel discussion on June 12, “We Now Pronounce You…” to look at the ways journalists do, and should–and shouldn’t–cover same-sex marriage as two related cases await decisions from the Supreme Court. Whether the justices use the Defense of Marriage Act and California’s Proposition 8 to recognize same-sex marriage at the national level, or whether it will remain legal on a state-by-state basis, how journalists cover the fight for marriage equality has profound implications–for our judiciary, for the public, and for gays and lesbians today.
The panel, held at the Newseum in Washington, DC, and sponsored by the ACLU, featured BuzzFeed reporter Chris Geidner, George Washington University Law Professor David Fontana, Steven Petrow, a New York Times columnist and former president of the National Lesbian and Gay Journalists Association, and American Prospect columnist EJ Graff. It was moderated by CJR’s Minority Reports columnist, Jennifer Vanasco.
