Vivian Schiller, NPR’s CEO, talked with CyberJournalist.net earlier this week, discussing everything from endowments to potential radio/newspaper partnerships to APIs (at NPR, “we have a very open-source mentality”) to, in particular, hyperlocal journalism. “I don’t think anybody’s doing hyperlocal really well,” Schiller said. There are a few exceptions, she noted–but, generally and currently, “nobody’s cracked the model.”
Which doesn’t mean it can’t be cracked. “The landscape is wide open,” Schiller said. “And it’s really something that not only we can do, but we really should do. It’s part of our mission to serve communities on the local level.”
