Is the Times’ Leibovich first to note a newly-plump Huck?
December 19, 2007

A week ago, I wondered to a colleague about how long it would be before a journalist pointed out that Mike Huckabee, who rose to national attention for losing over 110 pounds while governor of Arkansas, had added a few on the campaign trail. I predicted some sort of trend piece about how hard it is to eat right while trying to become leader of the free world.

Well folks, a little Nexis-ing suggests the golden doughnut goes to Mark Leibovich for this sober parenthetical: “For the record,” the Timesman writes today, Huckabee has ”gained back 12 of those pounds, enough for a visible paunch.” (I’d say that’s a conservative estimate.)

Anyhow, our next prize will go to the pundit who first wields this fact against Huckabee: can we really trust a man if he’ll yo-yo on weight?
