Because “any woman who sees this cover,” Republican media consultant Andrea Tantaros explained yesterday on Fox News, “will be shocked and horrified” by it. By the sight of Gov. Sarah Palin’s, apparently, hairy, porous, wrinkled face.

TANTAROS: This cover is a clear slap in the face to Sarah Palin. Why? Because it’s un-retouched. It highlights every imperfection that every human being has. But we’re talking unwanted facial hair, pores, wrinkles. This is a gross slap in the face after Newsweek has done so many favorable covers of Barack Obama that make him look presidential…and were clearly retouched, flawless..

Later in the segment (watch it below) Tantaros says, holding the magazine aloft, “This is mortifying! This is mortifying!”

I’m a woman! I want to be “shocked and horrified” but Newsweek doesn’t make it very easy to see — really, see– their cover online.

Easy to see online, though, is the article accompanying the cover which, too, shows some of Palin’s, um, wrinkles, er, “unretouched.” Something that did come up in the Fox segment, towards the end, very briefly, and then it was back to “so we all haven’t waxed our upper lip once and a while…”

(I’m going to leave it to to someone else to figure out What This Says About Gender and Image and Umbrage as Political Tool and Cable News and Our Priorities and such…)
