What are the essential books of journalism? A survey conducted at the Joint Journalism Historians Conference this spring, supplemented by “informal conversations,” has come up with a list–one that includes such standbys as Lippmann’s Public Opinion, Carey’s Communication and Culture, and Woodward and Bernstein’s All the President’s Men…but that, curiously, omits such standbys as McLuhan’s Understanding Media.
