The series touched briefly on these and other important contextual issues, but kept returning to the same heavy-handed and overly simplistic message: “Bupe is being abused and diverted on your dime.” It’s not that the Sun made a mountain out of a molehill. It discovered quite a sturdy foothill, in fact. Making a mountain out of it detracted from some first-rate reporting. Still, Baltimore has a massive heroin epidemic, and much of the research on bupe takes place there. The Sun rightly took the lead on an important national story centered in its backyard, and brought crucial balance to the coverage of this promising treatment.
