The Associated Press retracted two government-issued photographs last night after a photographer in Texas alerted the agency that the photos in question appeared to be doctored.
Bob Owen, chief photographer of the San Antonio Express-News, notified the AP that the photos of two deceased soldiers, who died in Iraq on Sept. 14, were nearly identical. Upon examining the photos, Owens noticed that everything except for the soldier’s face, name, and rank was the same. The most glaring similarity, Owen told CJR, was that the camouflage patterns of the two uniforms were “perfectly identical.”
After inspecting the photographs, the AP confirmed that the images were, indeed, Photoshopped, and issued eliminations on the two photos.
The elimination reads:
The content of this image has been digitally altered and does not accurately reflect the scene. No other version of the photo is available.
The photos were released by the U.S. Army at Fort Stewart in Georgia. Officials at the base could not be reached for comment.
“I’d like to think that the media holds itself pretty accountable and we try really hard to keep high standards,” Owen said. “Obviously the army, and the government, doesn’t see anything wrong with that [photo altering] at all.”

With it now clear to virtually everyone that the U.S. government is entirely owned and operated by compulsive liars, I'm not clear why any self-respecting news organization would ever again accept press releases, comments, recordings, videos, or photos from anyone on the federal payroll.

i heard one of these young gentlemens mother on the talk radio show today and it was truly sad. she said this was her sons 3rd tour of duty. she said she found out about his death from the news media and the government isn't giving her any answers on what really happened to her son. this is our government at its' worst and this is a dam shame how they are treating this young mans family. just like the johnson case the family was told she committed suicide and to find out she was actually married and now congress is getting involved. we the people and mostly the families need the straight dam truth.

Probably a military adviser soldier that got killed in the Russian/Georgia conflict and now that he is dead they need to put on the official list as dead but can't release the soldiers true picture otherwise the Ruskies might match the body up.

If it isn't, it should be made so "retroactively" (it worked for ATT) and these people punished with something more severe than losing their job.

This is one of the many reasons we can't afford to offer the Whitehouse to the likes of McCain and Palin. They're liars on the campaign, and continue to repeat lies even when confronted. They handle the truth too recklessly, the same way in which Bush got his entrance to be President. That's why this country is in the terrible fix we find ourselves. People will have to decide, do I accept my biases towards having a female on the ticket as the gimick to vote a ticket that mimicks what's in the Whitehouse now, or can I come to terms with my own racist thinking to overcome the problem with lost of homes, jobs, healthcare, social security, the financial instability, and retire two wars we're in. If you can't overcome the above mentioned, then put on your seat belt, because we're headed into a crash where there may be only casualities!

In his insightful analysis of the bipolar electoral system, Shatter the Illusions- Patriots Must Reject the Two-Party System, Peter Chamberlin notes that "Both candidates have more or less pledged to continue the failed military policies of Bush and Cheney and pretend that they are not lost causes."
Our love affair with the two-party system has blinded us to the fact that when choosing the lesser of two evils, we are choosing evil. Guaranteed.
Chamberlin warns, "The electoral farce is the epitome of this illusion-creating process. The psychologists and political scientists play on loyalties and human trust in their creation of political candidates who will fill party loyalists with false hope. The roots of the two-party system run through generations of families, workplaces and affiliations, binding unsuspecting sheeple with imaginary bonds of loyalty to lying politicians. Candidates with identical goals are portrayed as opposites, in order to catch naive unsuspecting souls from both sides of the fence in the same net. The illusion that either candidate will honestly represent the people, or work to save America or the world from the predatory forces that corrupt and bind us all, is a dangerous psychological poison that blinds the people to the truth, the only basis of real hope."How can we break from this illusion when all around us persist in believing a shabby, age old lie? Someone has to start with the simple observation that neither set of candidates are will help us realize the hope of truth and freedom.

Gee, Red Neckerson, if you have ever been patriotic enough to be in the military at all, you know that each and every soldier receives an official military portrait toward the end of Basic Training. (Usually at the end of a long day when he or she has gas burns all over the face). The Army didn't have to take photos of a "shredded corpse."

Man have you got your wires crossed. This country was founded on Christianity and a desire to be free. Why do some of you insist on keeping this democrat/republican game going on? Thats was got us in this mess to begin with. Divide and conquer is an age old game to keep the sheeple fighting amongst themselves while the politicians on both sides loot and rob us of our wealth, treasures and rights. There not republican rights or democratic rights, there OUR rights, We The People! When this country was founded there were neither republicans or democrats, just Americans. We have to come together people because they are stealing everything we have including our dignity. Our military has been lost for sometime now and are as tricky as our politicians and cannot be trusted. Research USS Liberty, the Gulf of Tonkin, Pearl Harbor, the USS Maine, 9/11 all false flags to get us into wars that the people did not want. They dont care about us. Some were orchestrated by democrats and others by the republicans. Get over this false left/right paradigm and take some history classes and wake up!

I am a photographerin the military, the DOD has strict regulations regarding manipulation of offical military images. The photographers in question who altered the images will most likely be in deep crap. One of the biggest reasons there are regulations against it is public perceptions, they dont want to lose credibility when you see a military image.

But obviously some Army functionary, possibly a Guardsman or Guardswoman from Anywhere USA with no journalism background, maybe not a college graduate, was tasked with providing the picture, only had an Army ID photo and photoshopped it to try to make it seem nicer.
Not saying it was the right thing to do, just that not everything is about the two national political parties and the fight between good and evil. Jeez.

No, it was not. The pilgrims were forced to come here because they were trying to impose their religion on others - not the other way around. It is also important to remember that the freakin' pilgrims were not the founders of this country. The founders are those people you see pictured on the money in your pocket - and they took great pains to keep christianity OUT of government. For god's sake, learn our basic history before you start talkin'....

This country was not founded on Christianity. If it had been, then it would have been spelled out in the constitution.
Yes - there is mention of the creator. And to some short-sighted folks... a confirmation of a believe in a creator means Christianity... but, that is not a correct assumption.
Most of the founding fathers were Masons. Masons believe in a divine power / creator... but they welcome Christians, Muslims, and people of all faiths - with the exception of Catholics... who they feel cannot keep a vow of secrecy.
Ask a Mason. Masons pray and talk about God in their meetings... but they are not all Christians.
But I do believe that this country was founded on the same principals taught by Jesus... which are the same as many other religions... basically, the Golden Rule - do unto others.
If the principles this country were founded on could be boiled down to an essence... it would be that every man (and woman) is born into this world equal.
When you truly accept that concept - then you will not try and hamper the freedom of others - because you have no right to do so. You will honor the free will of others as long as it doesn't hamper your free will.

I agree the photos should not be altered. I really don't understand why someone would. The fact is that these kids still died (and it looks like through some disturbing circumstances, too). It's still the faces of the two that died (again, why in the hell would someone want to put them on the same body?).
I guess what I am trying to say is 2 boys died and they are making a big deal about the pictures being photoshopped yet they wouldn't think twice (or say anything was wrong) about posting pictures of dead soldier laying in the street (which is what I meant by shredded corpses).

You poor bastards. I watch foxtel in Australia and have a fairly good understanding of what's happening over there. I like many of you, I too served in the Military and even served with Americans. I found them to be some of the nicest people I have ever met.
I can only say, you poor buggars, you don't deserve this shit. But where do you go and who can you trust.
Start afresh. Australia is looking for good people. Leave all this crap behind you and come in live over here. I live in the state of Queensland. Its a fantastic place to raise kids. There is thousands of miles of coastline. Large and small towns, Brisbane being the capital with just over 1.5 million people, the next biggest have no more than 200,000 with the majority having under 20,000 down to a couple of thousand. Remember what the US used to be like before all this garbage that is going on.
Australia is a great place. Ask any American who has met an Australian before. We are good people, and we need more good people. Doesn't make any difference to us if you are black or white or what ethnic background, who cares as long as you don't bring any abad feelings or beliefs. Australia is a very tolerant country which is prodominantly christian. We believe in free speach, freedom of worship and everyone over here who is over 18 years of age has to vote. Therefore, the majority picks who will govern you, not the minority.
We are extremely tolerant, we believe in God and we live in an urban environment which is ideal to raise our kids.
Unlike many other countries in the world, we like Americans. So what are you waiting for, start afresh and give you and your family what you truely deserve, a new start for you kids and their grandchildren.

I'm an Aussie too. We basically get a government loan for our higher education which we have to pay back once we reach a certain income threshhold. When I was at uni, the cost was very low but recently it has got more expensive for more prestigious degrees ... I think it is about $100,000 for a medical degree.
Australia is like how America used to be. At least our impression of how it used to be. I lived in New Jersey for four years. I'm sorry to say it but our general impression was that your country is being run by complete charlatans. They are very corrupt, violent, they've never earned an honest dollar in their lives and to make sure that things stay that way, they silence you with complete falsifications of modern history ( as to what happened in Europe 50 years ago). That said, it's still a great country in many ways. Americans are really nice people - ignorant of anything outside America but for the most part your hearts are in the right place and I think that's it's saving grace at the moment. Don't come to Australia though because America still has heaps going for it.

This Guy was taken to a hospital in Vladivistok after he was hit, and died shortly after. His Passport was shown on Russian NTV.

But one thing must not be forgotten as we get our collective asses kicked by another corporate dictatorship (This time with abstinence classes!):

Why do we need the government which by the way is composed of people worse of than you since they could not make a living in the private sector, dishing out their version and official reports. Someone should check if this solder's deployment papers were also altered in some way since August 1st, 2008. If his initial deployment was considered an "Iraq" casualty, then that should be listed in the currently military manifest. Unfortnately, civilians would not have access to that information - only the military. Then again, there's always JAG which can investigate further.

More evidence that we need to kick Republicans out of office. Even John McCain has had a hand in preventing the accurate dissemination of information about veterans (likely because he didn't want some of the information about how he complied with his captors to leak as it would certainly damage any semblance of credibility he has left).
We need true leaders like Barack Obama and Joseph Biden!

As one who served this deceitful, thankless, and unforgving nation during and over three major engagements in combat, and a dozen minor conflagrations, and then BETRAYED along with 432,000 cohorts on retired pay and the loss of our earned life-long health care I think this is good. All successor service troops have it coming to them. What else is new?

This altered photo incident is brought to you from the same people who covered up Pat Tillman's fratricide.

They get them killed in a for-profit war fueled by outright lies - then they slash their damn benefits (benefits earned with blood and more) - then they use their deaths as propaganda tools. The 'people' in this administration really are evil.....There's just no other word to describe them. I'm no christian, but sometimes i wish i were, just so i could content myself with the knowledge that they would all rot in hell. Sadly, since they own our judicial system, they will never receive the justice they so richly deserve.
[Oh, and for the record, the founders were mainly deists - not christians. That is historical fact, and no amount of BS revisionist history on the part of r-wingers will ever change that. They were, in fact, practitioners of the sort of faith that most r-wingers/evangelists mock as being little more than a half step above heathens.

As a military photographer, I don't appreciate being called a murderer or a propagandist. Not all of us are ethically challenged. I don't condone or agree with the altering of photos, but let's not lump all military people together with a few bad apples. After all, NO ONE posting here is innocent of some bias or unethical behavior. Yours truly included.

If you are a member of the US Military, you are definitely ethically and morally challenged for killing the poorest people in the world for Empire without caring about the crimes you are committing in the name of all Americans. Resign if you have any morals left or do you participate for the next re-enlistment bonus?

Since the photo in question was altered to provide a photo for use at the soldier's (unit) memorial service, then provided when a photo was requested by the AP, I think most of your comments here reflect pre-judgement at best, an addiction to hate at worst. Rather pathetic, particularly if most of the comments are from journalism students.

It is nice to see that you have a freedom of speech to knock our government. The problem is that no one gets the fact that NO ONE WANTS WAR BUT some time the OTHER SIDE IS NOT REASONABLE and WAR IS THE ONLY ANSWER THEY RESPOND TO. Don't you get it they die and fight for our freedoms that you all take for granted. Well all I know is that I love my army and the men and woman that serve it. They understand the greatness of our country and get the fact that it is worth fight and shedding blood for. Instead of making this sites why don't you get off you behinds and send our troops comfort packages. Instead of saying it is worthless it is not to them and by talking this way doesn't help their causes. i just want to say ALL DEMOCRATS MAKE ME SICK.
