Kevin Connolly, who has covered the USA for the BBC for the past three years, has written a Farewell, America column, “Kevin Connolly’s guide to American culture,” before moving on to an assignment in the Middle East. Connolly’s column includes mentions of—yes—guns, religion, and portion sizes, as well this toffee-nosed observation:
American writing, for example, beguiles and exasperates in equal measure.
Its newspapers - with one or two exceptions - are awful.
Endless sub-clauses roam across prairies of newsprint in search of the point, like homesteader wagons on the Oregon trail circling around a knackered old buffalo.

Says someone from the home of The Daily Mail.
