Taking off of Megan’s car chase post below, I see that NBC big shot David Gregory has just posted the following to Twitter:
watching msnbc now. why are all the crazy drivers who run from the police in my home state of california???!!!!
To which I ask:
why are all the crazy drivers who run from the police always on your network???!!!

Regarding David Gregory's question: it probably has something to do with the fact that California has more drivers than any other state (about two thirds more than Texas).

As long as you're retweeting twits, I really enjoyed this one:

D.B.: Yes. And, I'd bet, more news helicopters than any other state.
Spotting innumeracy can be fun!

Funny, that journo passive-voice again. I keep trying to tell David, you ARE one of "them."

Yes, yes. Our Los Angeles Daily Car Chase. the local LA news has been trying to recreate the ratings bonanza of the OJ Simpson Car Chase all these many years. And who knew, really, that so. many. people. sped away from the police on a daily basis? Not I!
You are right, it is a function of all those news helicopters in the air. Ostensibly they are up there monitoring the far-flung freeway traffic for the evening rush hour. And at any sign of two cop cars together below, the air-borne news crew smells the opportunity to get some excited, ratings-flogging face time, preempting that blow-dried anchor person who makes the megabucks! Away we go!
The funny thing is, people watch that, get excited about it, even today. No, really. The thing toned down there for a while years ago when the escapee shot himself in the head, and the stations felt bad about broadcasting that at dinnertime. But then they were back at it. Just the other day, one of the chasees was shot. That really caused a stir and people were talking about it at the water cooler. I missed the whole thing because I was busy debating the demise of journalism right here at CJR.
