The New Republic implodes, Rolling Stone's problematic rape story, and media divergence on the Eric Garner ruling
December 5, 2014

Culled from CJR’s own stories, plus the frequently updated “Must-reads from around the Web,” our staff recommendations for the best pieces of journalism (and other miscellany) on the internet, here are your can’t-miss must-reads of the past week:

Implosion of a Washington institution (Politico) – What will become of The New Republic now that its top two editors are out?

New Republic staffers resign en masse (Politico) – The majority of the magazine’s masthead resigned following news that its top two editors had walked.

Media raises criticism in Eric Garner case (CJR) – Commentators and news organizations from across the political spectrum criticized the grand jury decision not to indict Eric Garner’s killer. But a closer look at the analyses driving those critiques — the reasons they disagreed with the move — highlights the media’s ideological divide.

The Unmanageables (Vanity Fair) – Sarah Ellison takes you inside First Look Media: “When a crusading but conflict-averse billionaire bankrolls several of journalism’s most prominent mavericks to create a hard-nosed investigative news organizations, it’s a recipe for turmoil.”

Longform overload (CJR) – “The market is flooded with longform producers, even as the model for how to succeed is still yet to be cracked.”

Rolling Stone‘s omission in the UVA story proves problematic (CJR) – “Rolling Stone apparently never talked to the men accused of raping Jackie. Because of that omission, some are now questioning whether her story is true at all, and may risk supporting the very culture that Erdely argues against: one in which survivors of rape are not taken seriously.”
