George Entwistle lost one of the top media jobs on Earth without having done anything very wrong and within weeks of walking into the office. He will not walk into anything comparable easily. I don't know about this exact sum of money. But it strikes me that both "loss of office" and the ordeal he has gone through suggest that he should be paid what his contract says, which is what has happened here. Now, if only the BBC was as generous to its occasional contributors...
