America Must Change, Right Now – Well, Maybe

March 7, 2005

Here’s the subhead of this month’s Washington Monthly cover story, “The Case for The Draft”:

America can remain the world’s superpower. Or it can maintain its current all-volunteer military. It can’t do both.

And here’s the last paragraph of the first section of that same piece, the “nut” graph:

America has a choice. It can be the world’s superpower, or it can maintain the current all-volunteer military, but it probably can’t do both. [Italics ours.]

Somewhere between subhead and nut graph, it seems, the Monthly became a bit less self-assured.
